Ingredients
- 500 g Minced Beef
- 1 item Onion
- 1 tin Chopped Tomatoes
- 500 g Passata
- 1 item Beef Stock Cube
- 500 g Spaghetti
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil
- 2 tsp Chopped Garlic
- 1 bunch Fresh Basil
- 1 tsp Dried Oregano
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 2 items Dried Bay Leaves
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 60 g Parmesan Shavings
- 1 pinch Salt
- 1 pinch Pepper
Method
- Finely chop the onion. Roughly chop the basil.
- In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil, then add the minced beef with some salt and pepper. Brown the minced beef in the frying pan for 5 minutes.
- Drain off any excess fat carefully if you wish. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Continue to fry for 5 minutes until the onions are softened.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, passata, crumbled stock cube, basil, bay leaves, oregano, sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and leave to simmer on low for 10 minutes.
- Then cook the spaghetti in a separate pan according to instructions. It usually takes 8-10 minutes. Season the bolognaise with salt and pepper and keep simmering on low whilst the spaghetti is cooking.
- Once the spaghetti is cooked and drained, serve on to plates. Remove the bay leaves from the bolognaise carefully and serve with the spaghetti topped with parmesan shavings.
Tips
- This popular dish would not be complete without a serving of garlic bread!
Swaps and substitutes
- There are some fantastic bolognaise sauces you can buy ready made, and good value too. Replace the tomatoes, passata, stock, sugar and herbs with a jar of ready made sauce if using. Always handy to have one in the cupboard on standby just in case anyway!
- You can use other cheeses to top your bolognaise. If parmesan is too strong, try using a mild cheddar or mozzarella which is usually popular with the kids!
